Murad Ferhad (Murat Ferhat Yegül) is a ney player, trombonist, composer and ney maker. He began his musical training on the trombone before turning to the ney and Turkish makam music. Drawing on jazz and the makam tradition, he has worked with musicians from a range of musical backgrounds.
The ney lies at the heart of most of his compositions. Alongside performing and teaching, he has devoted many years to making and tuning the instrument.
His musical path began with piano, trombone and jazz, and gradually came to centre on the ney and Turkish makam music.
He studied trombone for four years at Bilkent University’s music high school in Ankara. Jazz classes and his early experiences on stage shaped his approach to improvisation, while an interest in Turkish music led him to use the trombone’s slide to explore makam intonation. This exploration grew alongside his study of the ney, which would later become central to his work.
From 2000 to 2005, he studied ney at the Konya Conservatory of Turkish Music, working with Sadrettin Özcimi, Süleyman Yardım and Emrah Hatipoğlu. A founding member of Kırıka, he played trombone with the group and also contributed to album recordings and concerts with other ensembles, including Gevende.
Between 2006 and 2008, he taught ney at Erciyes University. His regular participation in Mevlevi ceremonies during these years helped him grow as a performer and absorb the classical style into his playing. After settling in Britain, he led ney courses at the Yunus Emre Institute in London for many years. Through YunusBand, which he founded, and various international projects, he performed with musicians from different musical traditions.
Since moving abroad in 2008, he has created musical programmes for events attended by state dignitaries and diplomats. For some of these programmes, he has brought musicians together, served as artistic director and performed alongside them.
His work in ney making and tuning began in 2005 and deepened during his years in Britain. He continues to explore the internal structure of individual reeds, the placement of finger holes and the balance between notes. His attention to tuning is closely tied to the sound and expressive possibilities he seeks in his playing.
Based in Astana since 2019, Yegül continues his work as a performer, composer, teacher and ney maker. He is preparing his compositions, most of which centre on the ney, for release, and has recently renewed his focus on the trombone.
